Capsular Pattern
Definition:
The capsular pattern is a proportional limitation of the passive
movements of the elbow:
There is usually more limitation of
flexion than of extension.
As a rule, the pro- and supination are not limited; in a severe arthrtitis both rotations may be equally painful at the end of range
.

Meaning
A capsular pattern always indicates a lesion of the joint, whatever
its nature may be (= arthritis or capsulitis).
It may be either an acute synovitis or a chronic organised reaction of the fibrous capsule.
