The Shoulder

5* Passive lateral rotation

Procedure:

Elbow at a right angle
Elbow and upper arm against the trunk
Trunk and contralateral shoulder fixed
Take hold of the distal forearm
The arm is pulled with gentle pressure into full lateral rotation until the endfeel is reached.

Endfeel: Ligamentous

Remarks:

make sure to stabilize the elbow, so the rotation will take place around a vertical axis.
make sure to immobilize the contralateral shoulder in order to avoid movements of trunk and shoulder girdle.

Normal range: 90° / or the forearm is in line with the spine of the scapula.

Structures that stop the movement:

Anterior portion of the capsule
Medial rotators of the shoulder.
Contact between the major tubercule and the posterior part of the glenoid labrum.
