Palsy of the Axillary nerve

Causes

Clinical presentation

Pain and pins and needles in the deltoid area
Numbness at the antero-lateral aspect of the shoulder.
Considerable wasting of the deltoid muscle.

The functional examination of the shoulder shows some weakness of the abduction.
The accessory tests for the deltoid muscle are weak and painless.

resisted horizontal adduction

resisted extension

Treatment:
None.
Surgical decompression gives poor results.
Sometimes there is a spontaneous recovery.
