Localisation of the pain.

The gleno-humeral joint , the "rotator cuff" and bursae have a C5 segmental origin. The pain is therefore felt in the C5 dermatome.

The clavicle and the acromio-clavicular joint have a C4 origin. This means that acromio-clavicular pain will never spread beyond the deltoid area.

The localisation of the pain and its distal reference is an indication for the intensity of the complaints. The more serious the lesion, the greater the pain and the further its reference.

The distal border of the pain is therefore very important:

• to estimate the degree of inflammation
• to evaluate treatment
• to determine the stage of arthritis (in a capsular pattern)

With increasing intensity of stimulation, the pain will be felt consecutively at:

• the deltoid area
• the elbow
• the forearm
• the base of the thumb
