The Shoulder
Chronic Subdeltoid bursitis
Local Treatment
Procedure
As a rule, only one part of the bursa is affected.
- If, on palpation local tenderness is found in the superficial (subdeltoid) part, this must be infiltrated.
- If no local tenderness is detected on palpation, the deep (subacromial) part is considered to be at fault and infiltrated.
- A diagnostic infiltration with 10 ml of a 0.5% procaïne solution is always administered first. The injection may prove curative as well.
- The infiltration is repeated if there has been improvement but not full recovery after one week.
- If no improvement is obtained after one week, 20 to 30 mg triamcinolone must be added to the next infiltration.
- Weekly injections until full cure ( with a maximum of three injections with triamcinolone).
