The Elbow

Help: Examination

Several resisted movements are painful

  1. Resisted flexion and resisted supination are both painful.

The pain is due to a lesion of the biceps brachii, which has a double function.
In case of doubt, resisted supination should be performed with the elbow in extension.
This starting position excludes activity of the biceps.

  2. Resisted pronatie and resisted flexion of the wrist are both painful.

This is a typicalpattern for a lesion at the common tendon of the flexors of the wrist and the pronator teres at the medial epicondyle (golferselbow)

  3. Both resisted extension of the wrist and resisted supination are painful

This is a phenomenon that sometimes is encountered in tennisellbow type IV.
For an unknown reason, also the supinator (localised just under the bellies of extensores carpi radiales ) is involved in the process. Treatment of the tenniselbow also makes disappear the painful resisted supination.
