The Shoulder

Acute rupture of the infraspinatus tendon.

Treatment of an acute rupture

A total rupture of the infraspinatus is functionally much better tolerated than a rupture of the supraspinatus tendon.

Surgical repair may be considered in young, active and cooperative patients.

If a conservative treatment is given:

  1. First a local infiltration in the tendinous remnants in order to abolish inflammation and pain.
  2. Physiotherapy with functional exercises. Emphasis should be given to stabilising and strengthening of the shoulder girdle (levator scapulae and latissimus dorsi) and proprioceptive exercises for the other cuff muscles.
  3. Exercises (passive and active) in order to prevent isolated anterior contraction of the capsule.
