Disorders of the shoulder that are characterized by a non-capsular pattern of limitated movement are:

• Acute subdeltoid bursitis
• Acute bursitis with calcium deposit
• Acute haemorrhagic bursitis
• Chronic 'adhesive' bursitis
• Isolated posterior capsular contracture
• Isolated anterior capsular contracture
• Subcoracoid bursitis

However, it is not always easy to detect a subtle limitation of movement.

Full passive range of movement with pain at the end may point to a sprained AC ligament or to a chronic subdeltoid bursitis.

Discrepancy between a full and painless passive elevation and a seriously limited but painless active elevation may indicate a neurological lesion.
